Nick Kroll has played a radio host called The Douche (_Parks and Recreation_), a spin instructor named Tristafé (_Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt_) and a German foosball enthusiast named Juergen (_Community_). But in the new movie _Adult Beginners_, which hits theaters (and iTunes and video on demand) Friday, Kroll plays a character that’s a little less hyperbolic and a little more relatable.

In the film, viewers meet Jake, a failed entrepreneur who moves in with his pregnant sister (Rose Byrne) and her husband (Bobby Cannavale, Byrne’s real-life boyfriend), and becomes a nanny to their young child. The story was inspired by Kroll’s own experience as the youngest of four siblings and uncle to a dozen nieces and nephews. After developing the idea with Mark Duplass, his co-star from _The League_, he enlisted husband-and-wife team Liz Flahive and Jeff Cox to write the screenplay.

“I wanted to have a female voice in helping to put the script together, because it’s really as much about me as it is about my sister in the movie,” he says. “A lot of movies are written by 30-year-old white guys, and you don’t want your characters all to sound like 30-year-old white guys.”

Fans who know Kroll from his recently retired Comedy Central sketch show _Kroll Show_, on which he played characters like the tuna-loving Gil Faizon and craft services extraordinaire Fabrice Fabrice, may be surprised by how _normal_ a character Jake is. But Kroll insists that the gulf between Faizon and Jake is not so gaping, after all.

“The goal is to create something that just feels really believable, whether it’s a grounded character in a dramedy or a toilet baby who has been forced into becoming a father himself. How does that guy talk, how does he walk, how does he feel about his mom, how does he feel about his sister,” Kroll explains. “I’m trying to do the same homework regardless.”

[00:07] Harvey. He's so likable. I kinda want to give a bad
[00:11] answer and then have him like look the barrel of the
[00:13] camera like. [ MUSIC ] This guy's an idiot. I loved
[00:18] Mad Men it would have been really fun and cool to be
[00:21] on Mad Men but, there were no Jews in the 60's. And
[00:23] then finally I'd love to be on Real Housewives of
[00:25] Atlanta, just get in there and mix it up. I'm the
[00:28] youngest of four kids all three of my siblings have four
[00:32] children of their own so I have twelve nieces. Nieces
[00:34] and nephews, and I genuinely believe that my
[00:38] siblings would rather have, like, a 14 year old girl
[00:41] baby sit than me. So, I thought that would
[00:45] make an interesting premise for a movie of a youngest
[00:47] brother who seems slightly incapable of caring for
[00:51] anyone but himself, and barely capable of caring for
[00:54] himself who then, becomes the nanny to
[00:58] her. To his sister's kid. [ MUSIC ] Don't climb up there.
[01:03] Tate, please just give me one minute. I wanted to have
[01:07] a female voice in helping to put the script together
[01:11] because it's really as much about me as it is about
[01:15] my sister in the movie, played by Rose Byrne. I mean
[01:18] you are the student who is literally A million times
[01:21] smarter than you. It was important to me with a
[01:24] character like Rose's, as a young mother who is
[01:28] juggling a career, that I think is emblematic of what
[01:32] it's like to be a modern woman. And, I wanted to be
[01:36] able to capture that as much as possible and you
[01:39] know, a lot of movies are written by 30 year old white
[01:42] guys. After Adult Beginners comes out on Friday April
[01:46] 24, in theaters, video- on- demand and iTunes. I
[01:50] am going to make a movie called My Blind Brother.
[01:53] And then I've got some TV stuff and some of the
[01:56] characters from Kroll Show might live on in some form
[01:58] or other. And I'm just, it's honestly, it's an all
[02:02] out assault to be in Time, Time's 100. Next year, I
[02:06] mean, that's all it is. It's just a, it's all towards that. I
[02:09] can just retire. Just be done. You know? And I'd like
[02:12] Kanye to write it. [ MUSIC ]
