Eddie Ray Routh admitted to killing American Sniper author Chris Kyle in a rambling, videotaped confession that was played in a Stephenville, Texas, courtroom Monday.

“I’ve got tons of people eating on my soul right now,” Routh, 27, said during the 90-minute confession, the Dallas Morning News reports. “If I did not take down his soul, he was going to take down mine.”

Routh’s defense team has pled insanity on behalf of their client, who offered shifting and at times incoherent explanations of his motives. “I imagine they’re headhunters,” Routh said, “trying to hunt everybody down.” Routh also likened talking to Kyle to “talking to the wolf.”

The former Marine expressed remorse for killing Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield, at a Texas gun range in 2013. “I’m just sorry for what I’ve done,” he said in the videotaped interview.

Prosecutors were expected to rest their case on Tuesday.
