### TIME Newsletters: key statements

## Real Simple

Feb 6, 2015 8:40 PM UTC

Certain items in your house practically scream “toss me” when their prime has passed. That mysterious extra white layer on the Cheddar? A sure sign it needs to be put out of its misery. Chunky milk? Down the drain it goes.

But what about that jar of olives or Maraschino cherries that has resided in your refrigerator since before the birth of your kindergartner? Or the innumerable nonedibles lurking deep within your cabinets and closets: stockpiled shampoo and toothpaste, seldom-used silver polish? How do you know when their primes have passed?

With help from experts and product manufacturers, _Real Simple_ has compiled a guide to expiration dates. These dates are offered as a rough guideline. The shelf lives of most products depend upon how you treat them. Edibles, unless otherwise indicated, should be stored in a cool, dry place. (With any food, of course, use common sense.) Household cleaners also do best in a dry place with a stable temperature. After the dates shown, beauty and cleaning products are probably still safe but may be less effective.

[**Food**](http://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/surprising-expiration-dates/page2?xid=time-rs)

**Beer**Unopened: 4 months.

**Brown sugar**Indefinite shelf life, stored in a moistureproof container in a cool, dry place.

**Chocolate (Hershey bar)**1 year from production date

**Coffee, canned ground**Unopened: 2 years

**Frozen dinners**Unopened: 12 to 18 months

**Frozen vegetables**Unopened: 18 to 24 months

### 7 Foods That Taste Better Now Than They Will All Year

![Kale](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltb838354ec0e65abe/69877990428a9e0d6acc689c/kale.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Kale: The cold-weather king, bitter kale is made mellower by the bitter cold. It can thrive in temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit, Casanova says. Getty Images

![Brussels sprouts](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt18efbca1206c97b7/6987799b2dce01f2eb9dcedb/brussels-sprouts.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Brussels sprouts: If you still think you hate Brussels sprouts, try them now. They're sweeter than summer sprouts, she says. (Failing that, of course, try frying them with bacon.) Getty Images

![Kohlrabi](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt39bf2076e9935b16/69877990524fc0f520debde1/kohlrabi.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Kohlrabi: "Cabbage turnip" in German, this knotty, weird-looking root vegetable is a survivor. "Kohlrabi does not like hot summer temperatures at all, but thrives in cool weather," Casanova says. "Transplants can be put out six weeks before frost with an expected harvest in only a few short weeks." Getty Images

![Mustard greens](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt86409cec66c68e2b/69877991e53abad2dc4d702b/mustard-greens.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Mustard greens: The peppery plant kicks its way through the winter, and always tastes sweeter when it's nipped by frost. Getty Images

![Parsnips](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltbd9a02a2d5bb778f/698779935f570f4b3eb14a83/parsnips1.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Parsnips: Yes, even foods that aren't green can withstand the cold. The pale parsnip, which looks like a yellow-white carrot, is best harvested after a hard frost, Casanova says. Getty Images

![red cabbage](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt6d5340a68ee03202/698779925f570fdacfb14a7e/purple-cabbage.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Cabbage: It may look like a delicate flower, but some types of cabbage can survive temperatures as low as 26 degrees, Casanova says, making it ideal for a winter harvest. Getty Images

![collard greens](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltb250cc506025be96/698779905f570f4121b14a7a/collard-greens.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

## Transcript

This is my first step in every eye look that I ever do. I've used one of these sort of things in my bath before and it wasn't that great. It's quite fancy. So if you go on to you tube and you type in beauty box or you type in the name of any specific beauty boxes you will literally get thousands of hits. Hey you tube so a couple of days ago I got my January beauty box. [ MUSIC ] You will see woman opening up there packages [ LAUGH ] and showing you what they got. Its actually pink which I love. They will be holding up their samples. You actually get three full size products in this box. My name's Anita Hamilton, I'm a contributor to time.

com. And I wrote this story on Beauty Boxes. [ MUSIC ] Beauty Boxes are monthly subscription services that you sign up for on the internet. Each month you receive a small box. Which contains four to six samples of makeup, cream, lotion, mascara, eyeliner. And the idea's that you get to try a limited selection of samples, and if you like them, you might then go online and buy something. There's a viral marketing aspect to this. You might tweet, hey I love this new, you know, body polish I got. [ MUSIC ] Or you might, you know, write on your blog. Hey, here's what I got. You might post pictures.

Or you would do it on Facebook or Youtube. [ UNKNOWN ] Is a really good brand. So I'm pretty per chuffed to have these, actually. There are certain, you know, bloggers and so forth who have actually created, like, a brand for themselves as far as, you know? They go through everything, and they tell you, oh, this is so much better than the other one. Here they're just comparing different boxes or different products in general. So they really build their own reputation and you know, they can be, it's, it's funny, it's fun. Just the comments they make, just makes you laugh. So, I was really happy to see that.

You guys know that I'm a big Nix fan too. [ LAUGH ] Sounds like Nix like what sport? Is it like basketball or something? The full size is $ 45. I'm assuming this is not the full size, but I mean, it's a, it's a ample sample. [ LAUGH ] Oh, my God. Didn't even plan that. That smells so sweet. It smells like a candy bar. Not a candy like, chocolate bar, candy orange bar. Or put sugar on it or something, I don't know, it smells so good. [ MUSIC ] The global beauty business is 382 billion dollars each year. And even though a lot of businesses are going online, beauty has been really slow to go online, it's only about 4- 6 % of total sales.

And the reason why is cause people want to try things before they buy it and you know make- up isn't cheap. So, these new monthly services are bridging the online with the offline and it's just such a huge growth potential. For me the idea of this is like getting a little touch of luxury in your, in your kind of post every month and getting. Products that you might never get to try usually. Beauty is one of the first industries, consumer idustries, to rebound from the recession. The whole idea of affordable luzry, and, of course, beauty boxes play right into that. Until next time, adios. I'll talk to you guys soon.

I will see you in max videos. Bye. [ MUSIC ] [ SOUND ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
