An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood to death.
The group is part of a larger trial involving over 1,200 people, charged amid an ongoing crackdown on the Brotherhood’s ranks and Islamist allies.
The defendants were sentenced in relation to clashes that took place last August in the turmoil that followed after security forces broke up two Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo. The protesters were demanding the reinstatement of President Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted in July. Hundreds of people were killed in ensuing violence.
Lawyers for the defendants complained Monday that they had no chance to present their cases, since the Minya court, south of Cairo, issued its ruling after only two sessions.
