According to the newly released paleontology report titled ‘The Extinction of the Dinosaurs’ – published by the journal _Biological Reviews –_ the dinosaurs could have likely survived the asteroid, had it not been for the unfortunate environmental conditions they were already facing as a species. Hebrivores were already decreasing in population at the time, says the report, and the loss in biodiversity created a great deal of problems for dinosaurs, most specifically less food available at the bottom of the food chain. “If the asteroid hit a few million years earlier, when dinosaurs were more diverse, or a few million years later, when they had a chance to recover as they often had done before after diversity losses, then dinosaurs probably wouldn’t have gone extinct,” said University of Edinburgh paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Stephen Brusatte, who led the study. ## Transcript We all know the dinosaurs were an unlucky bunch. Six mile wide asteroids don't hit our precious blue planet all that often but a newly released paleontologist report suggests they are far more lucky that we previously thought. Is a set of circumstance that were probably stressing them, a number of environmental changes. So, if this asteroid had hit a few million years earlier or later, they may have actually survived. It's plausible. To be clear, an asteroid that size, hitting the earth, would be catastrophic no matter what. An estimated 6 miles wide. The space rock caused Tsunamis, powerful earthquakes, acid rain, a darkening of the planet. And left a crater 124 miles wide. And 12 miles deep. But even with all that researchers say the prehistoric creatures. Could have survived the asteroid if it had not been for the difficult conditions. They were already dealing with. Researchers cite a loss in bio diversity as one of the big problems. Scientists believed the plant eating population just happened to be shrinking. In number at the time.
