Deb Greene, a 65-year old grandmother, purchased it at the store Cannabis City on July 8, when the state’s first legal, recreational marijuana stores [opened](http://time.com/2955024/washington-where-to-buy-pot/). The retiree brought “a chair, sleeping bag, food, water and a 930-page book” so she could camp out overnight and be the first in line, the [AP reported](http://bigstory.ap.org/article/washington-pot-shops-prepare-historic-sales) at the time. She purchased two bags of legal weed, one for personal use and another that was signed by Cannabis City owner, James Lathrop, so it could be “saved forever,” Greene told [the Seattle Times](http://blogs.seattletimes.com/pot/2014/07/07/grandmother-plans-overnight-wait-to-be-seattles-first-legal-pot-buyer/). “You don’t use history.” As [Greene told ](http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/blog/2014/07/the-first-in-line-to-buy-legal-marijuana-in.html)the Puget Sound Business Journal, “I wanted to be a part of this, this is part of the history of our city.” **MORE**: [The Rules About Pot Just Changed in Washington D.C.](http://time.com/3001792/washington-dc-pot-decriminalization-law/) **MORE**: [House Votes to Help Pot Businesses Use Banks](http://time.com/2995182/pot-banks-congress-vote/) ## Transcript Large crowds, and presumably thicker smoke than ever before, as both Colorado and Washington State celebrated the pot smokers holiday 4 / 20, but even traveling to the first two states in the US to legalize recreational marijuana use, wasn't enough to keep everyone out of trouble. You can't smoke marijuana in public in Denver, so after giving warnings, Denver Police issued at least 90 pot related citations over the last two days. By the end of the day, KMGH reports the number of tickets increased to 130 and that's compared to just five citations issued at the 420 celebrations last year, but even with more people cited, local media didn't report much complaining from the smokers. This is a celebration of how far Colorado has come. Big difference the crowd's happier, it's safer, more security, nice, real nice. The positive feedback at least partially stemmed from the lack of violence. Denver's 420 last year ended when someone fired shots hitting two people and sending the massive crowd scrambling. Bruce Barcott, a journalist writing a book about legalizing marijuana set for release next year, tweeted: Biggest surprise of CannabisCupDenver: most attendees are from outside Colorado. Informal surveys today peg it like 80 % tourists. Smokers in Washington state also got in on the celebration, though many of the stories from local media outlets centered around Monday's pot retail lottery. The states, drawing to see which business owners will get licenses to sell recreational marijuana. While there are still plenty of people upset, the two states legalized in the first place and TV stations in both states talked to residents embarrassed by Sunday's celebrations. Barcot Road in Op Ed for CNN, encouraging people to watch the celebrations knowing, that this isn't exactly representative of the pot legalization movement. What you see on Sunday may be rude crude and obnoxious, but it bears as much relevance to marijuana reform as New York's raucous Saint Patrick's Day parade does to the history of the Irish people.
