Authorities have rounded up at least 11 people in the past two days who are believed to have been involved in the savage attack on Hong Kong journalist Kevin Lau last month.
According to the AFP, two of the suspects who were arrested in Dongguan, a city just over the border in southern mainland China, are believed to have ties to the infamous organized crime syndicate the Triads.
On Feb. 26, Lau was stabbed six times by an assailant armed with a meat cleaver in broad daylight. The brutal attack came only weeks after he was ousted as editor of the Chinese-language Ming Pao newspaper and replaced by an journalist rumored to have less editorial independence.
The former editor remains in hospital in stable condition. On Wednesday, Lau released a statement claiming he was bewildered that police were unable to provide evidence of a direct connection between his work in journalism and the assault.
